Hi - I'm Ali Stroker.

This past year I became the first actress in a wheelchair to perform on Broadway in the 2015 revival of Spring Awakening.

I have also been on reality tv, and was a finalist on season two of The Glee Project.  I then went on to play Artie's love interest on GLEE.

In 2009, I was the first person in a wheelchair to graduate from Tisch's drama program at New York University.

Most of my life is filled with performing, but I am also an advocate for people with disabilities and believe that any limitation can be an opportunity.

I have had the privilege to not only get to know Jesse Billauer, but now count him as one of my friends.  He founded a non-profit called Life Rolls On, which organizes free epic sports events for wheelchair athletes. While living in Los Angeles, I had an opportunity to surf for the first time and meet some amazing people from the disabled community at a Life Rolls On event.  It was an awesome experience and completely changed my life!

Salons for Change is a new organization that produces live-stream charity concerts. I’m excited to be their first artist.  I hope that you’ll tune in to Mogul’s Facebook Live page to watch the concert and help support Life Rolls On on November 16th at 8:00pm.

COLOR... PINK

SEASON... SUMMER

VACATION SPOT... LONG BEACH ISLAND, NJ

My advice would be: (I love lists) 1. Work hard and focus on your strengths. 2. Read plays, see musicals, watch good TV, and immerse yourself in the arts. 3. Create a support system for yourself (family, friends, artists, and fellow actors) 4. Create your own work. Write, rehearse, sing all the time, and see as much theatre as possible. 5. Say YES.

My hobbies outside of acting are traveling, hanging out with friends, seeing theatre, making greeting cards, and being with family. Being on Broadway was a dream come true. It was really hard work. 8 shows a week is not easy, and once the honey moon first 4 weeks were over there were days when the show felt like work. Spring Awakening was such a fulfilling show to do, and I think we were really lucky to have incredible direction and support through the process. Weekends were the hardest because we would have 1 show Friday night, 2 shows Saturday and 2 shows Sunday. By Sunday night we were all exhausted!

You're such an inspiration - thank you for answering questions here! For anyone that is dealing with biases in the workplace &/or life, what advice do you have for them? And on the other end, what advice would you give to help people become more aware of their biases and what they can do to prevent them?

I was just talking about biases with my friend today. I wrote something like this in another post, but I think it's worth repeating. We have no control other people's beliefs and responses. We only have control over our own. I think modeling the way you want to be treated is a good strategy. Creating an outlet for yourself to express the frustration and pain, is also so important. Everyday is a new day, and I like to think people are doing the best they can. Stay true to who you are and you will attract your people. Create community of like minded people. It's saved my life.

I think it's important to find the right school and musical theatre program for you. I would forget about how their ranked or what famous person went there. Go visit the schools, stay overnight if you can and see if you can imagine yourself there. That's the most important part about finding the right college, in my opinion.

Heartbreak is never easy. It is a time to reflect and allow yourself to feel all the feelings. When I was going through a breakup I remember really needing my support system and being reminded that I had other people in my life who loved me other than my ex. I also think it's important to allow yourself to feel an emotion FULLY. For example, if you're feeling angry, GET ANGRY. All emotions pass, so if you remember that while your in pain this will give you relief knowing that you won't feel this forever. Hope that makes sense.

I have experience being excluded and that was really painful. My advice for your friend would be to reach out for help. There are many people, both teachers and students who can support them. I also think it's important to know that you can not control how someone else behaves. You only can control your response. E + R = O This means the events of your life + YOUR response = The outcome You have control over your response. No one can take that way from you.

Being on GLEE was awesome. I shot my episode over 3 weeks. The process was longer than what most scripted shows are like because first I had to go into the studio and record the song I was singing, and then I learned the choreography for the number, and finally we shot it. I like doing both TV and Theatre. They are really different and I am fulfilled by both.

Supporting positive change in the world has been an essential part of my growth as a woman. Salons for Change and Mogul stand for just that. Life Rolls On was the charity I chose because they changed my life. I'll tell the story, I went to one of their surfing events back in 2010 and I met so many incredible people with Spinal Cord Injuries who were there to surf as well. I had never had friends in chairs and I was always a little afraid of hanging with other people who had the same disability as me. It felt too vulnerable, and honestly too painful. It was a mirror that I wasn't ready to look into. After meeting these people I started hanging out with them, and I began to realize I needed this community so much in my life. I needed other people in chairs who got it. Who understood what the everyday was like living with a spinal cord injury. These people have supported me in a way that I never expected. They have become family and I am forever grateful to Life Rolls On. No amount of money raised tomorrow night could ever repay them for the gift they gave me.

You're amazing! I remember watching the tv show that followed three Broadway actresses auditioning and training to become the next Elle Woods when Legally Blonde was about the launch on Broadway. The training seems very intense and rigorous for physical and vocal training! How would your training schedule and overall day look like? It's so exciting to be able to speak to a Broadway star!

My advice to anyone who is wanting to be a performer would be to focus on your strengths and find the projects that really resonate with you. Your work will always be better when your doing it from the heart. My motto has been been "Make your limitations your opportunities." With every challenge there is a gift. I know sometimes it's not obvious, but hidden under fear and pain is an opportunity. For example, my wheelchair is seen by many people as a limitation, and in many ways they are correct, but I've DECIDED to make my chair into my opportunity. Doors will open because of my chair, and those are the doors I want to pursue.
