Hi! I'm Willie Garson. I'm an actor who has appeared in over 300 episodes of television and more than 70 films. I'm best known for my long runs on television, as Mozzie on "WHITE COLLAR", Stanford Blatch on "SEX AND THE CITY", and Henry Coffield on "NYPD BLUE". I currently appear for the last 3 seasons as the grifter with a heart of gold Gerard Hirsch on "HAWAII 5-0". I'm also going to be in Season 3 of the Daytime Emmy-nominated digital series Conversations in L.A. where I play Dr. Kerr.

I was born in New Jersey, and I started training at The Actors Institute In New York, before majoring in Psychology and Theater at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. After graduation, I quickly started landing guest roles on shows such as CHEERS, FAMILY TIES, THIRTYSOMETHING, LA LAW, as well as continually recurring on a wide array of shows including X-FILES, TWIN PEAKS, TWO & A HALF MEN, STARGATE, PUSHING DAISIES, BOY MEETS WORLD, GIRL MEETS WORLD, THE PRACTICE, ALLY MCBEAL, etc etc etc. My favorite longform on TV was playing the evil Dr. Kreutz for Steven Spielberg in the acclaimed miniseries TAKEN.

On the big screen, other than reprising his SEX & THE CITY role for two features, I have collaborated with the Farrely Brothers on 3 films: SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, KINGPIN, and FEVER PITCH, as well as appearing in SOAPDISH, GROUNDHOG DAY, MARS ATTACKS, THE ROCK, BEING JOHN MALKOVITCH, and many others.

I have often been used by such varied directors as Spike Jonze, Michael Bay, the late great Mike Nichols, and Ron Shelton. FEED touched on a subject I was very proud to be a part of, and I showed off my entirely fake saxophone playing for POLKA KING. My upcoming films include WALK TO VEGAS, and MAGIC CAMP.

As a director, I have directed episodes of WHITE COLLAR and GIRL MEETS WORLD, and, with Warner Brothers, have 2 TV shows in development as producer/creator, as well as a film to direct in development with Wonderstar Productions.

I continue to perform with various bi-coastal theater companies such as Naked Angles, Manhattan Theater Club, The Roundabout Theater, and The Geffen. I am also very involved with many charities, including AMFAR, Camp Joslin for Diabetes, Doctors Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity, RepresentUS, and especially The Alliance for Childrens Rights, which facilitates adoptions in LA County----this has a special place in my family, as I adopted my son Nathen in Los Angeles in 2010. I've twice served as National Spokesman for National Adoption Day.

Aside from acting, I'm known as a world-class poker player, having been nicknamed "Evil Willie" on the first episode of CELEBRITY POKER SHOWDOWN, and I continue to play in tournaments all over the world, both for charity, and with the WORLD POKER TOUR. Obsessed with the idea of being a part of comfortable spaces where people can come together over a great meal and a cocktail, I'm a partner in several successful restaurants, including LITTLE DOM's in Los Angeles and, GEM in New York City, the brainchild of wunderkind celebrity chef Flynn McGarry.

Now's your chance to ask me anything! Please write your questions in the comments section below and I'll answer the questions live on Friday, April 27th at 1pm ET.

Is it surreal to look back at your success and how successful you are now? Do you ever have 'pinch me' moments? How do people stay grounded once they make it?

It's always surreal to have people respond to you, but it is what it is, and important to keep in reality ALWAYS. If I was a terrific accountant, perhaps people would ask for my autograph. It's just a more public thing I do for a living, and when people are excited about that it sure feels good. But it's not reality.

I did a workshop with you at TAI either in New York with Sally or in L.A. with Dan.  In the mid 80's.  Were you in Samurai?  And on another note.  Where the heck are my keys?

One where he feels comfortable and free to explore and take risks and has opportunities to try and fail. Asking other actors in your area is great, and truly all it takes is that one teacher to connect with. Don't be afraid to try different ones, and as far as colleges are concerned, there are so many great programs out there, just make sure it is a college priority, not just some side business to get some "artsy" kids there.

Honestly, hopefully whoever I am working with at the moment. I love to work with people I know, but as actors we add those great situations all the time. I never met Matt Bomer before we started, but I'd work with him every day for the rest of my life and be happy. Same with Tim DeKay, who I did know well, that was a great treat. Sarah Jessica is another one, no such thing as a bad day or a bad time breaking a scene, ever---we brought so many things from our personal life together onto the screen, it was delicious (we'd known each other for 10 years before the show started).....Learning and working together is the best. I'd say that Jimmy Smits on NYPD BLUE and Sarah Jessica taught me how to act on camera, and Matt and Tim and I (and Marsha and Sharif and Dihanne) got to enjoy those lessons together.

What are your thoughts about Cynthia Nixon running? After 2017’s election, I thought I’d never want to see another celebrity running again, but from what I’ve seen, she may be swaying me :)

I think it's wonderful. She's so smart and so well-prepared, and so empathetic--and isn't that what we are all hoping for. In my opinion---yes, this is MY opinion----a lot of people chased the shiny new coin and it turned out to be a scam, a "celebrity" with a trail of victims in business and personally, with no real desire to help people, no empathy and no real goals other than self-promotion and power, and looking very wealthy----for some people looked very attractive as an alternative to a "traditional" candidate. Cynthia is none of those things---she's a Mom, a deeply informed citizen, a caring person about injustice and rights and quality of life for people, and driven to improve lives, not her own. There's a huge difference there.

Absolutely. I chose to study psychology because I was an actor before college (Wesleyan), and was going to be one after, and to be honest, it's super expensive to go there. So I thought about what I could study that could hopefully enhance my work as an actor, and psych was a perfect fit. Actually created my own double major, The Psychology of Theater (not pretentious at all, right?)

What was the transition like of going from actor to director? Was it a difficult change to make or did it feel natural to be on the other side of the camera?

It was almost a natural one----I wasn't starting to direct to launch my amazing directing career, I was doing it because I was going to make a great episode, that was the start. I've always been a "collaborative" actor, we're all in it together to tell the story the best way possible, so after standing on sets for 30 years, it wasn't too hard. I worked VERY hard to learn technical things, that was the trick for me, almost like surgery, but the storytelling part came pretty easily. When I moved to sitcom directing (Girl Meets World), it was back to more storytelling only, because those shows have a technical language that pretty much runs itself with the crew.

Hello @Willie Garson  sir! I am probably the biggest White Collar fan in the world! Absolutely loved the show! My question is:

I absolutely loved Mozzie - did you and Matt Bomer share a Neil and Mozzie kinda relationship in real life? Also, how much do you personally identify with Mozzie?

Look forward to your answers. 😊

Matt Bomer and I became very close immediately (to be honest, my Mom was passing away when we started, and Matt was a true friend right away), and we spent SOOOOO much time together, HUNDREDS of scenes, that we bonded in a way that will never go away, even until today. Mozzie is the closest I've played to myself (except for the criminal part---so far), I got to write a lot of my lines and jokes and it was just the best.

It doesn't seem to make sense for colleagues to openly feud, rather than contact each other if there is an issue. Having some experience in this area, haha, it can often be baffling and confusing as to why someone would do that publicly instead of contacting the person directly.

Hi! I'm graduating this May with a Theatre-Performance degree from SDSU.  I will be moving to LA, when my lease ends in San Diego, at the end of this summer to pursue a career in Film/Television. What pieces of advice could you give to someone like me, who is about to make a transition into the professional world? What do you attribute your success to? What is your definition of success? And lastly, what steps should I take to prepare myself for success in the industry?

ACT-----EVERY SINGLE DAY. Whether it's in a class, or with a small theater company, or trying out for commercials or voiceovers, just ACT and TRAIN, always, WHEREVER. If that's what you want to do, and your focus is realistic and driven, you will be happy. That's happiness, and that's the definition of success.

And lastly, what steps should I take to prepare myself for success in the industry?

I think it's very difficult, but I certainly would never rule it out, at least for me. We have all been sad and disappointed that we aren't in production right now.

No such thing. Both are terrific actors who created and played indelible characters perfectly. That one of them feels differently saddens a lot of people, as the rest of us had no idea they felt that way.

Do you prefer stage or film? To be an actor, do you believe you should train? Or is it better to trust your natural talent?

Should you train???? Ummmmmm, strangest question ever. Should you train to do ANYTHING you do with your life? YES, always, and never STOP training. I prefer whatever I'm doing at the moment, and that's the real answer.

And, did you ever struggle as an artist? If so, how did you get through the difficult times of handling rejection?

Everyone struggles. I like to say I've never worked a day in my life, because what I do is what I have wanted to do. Let's say you're dream is to be a bartender, but you hate cutting limes. Well even when you are stuck cutting those limes, you still are a bartender. That's how I feel when I don't get a project I truly want, I'm in the game and getting to do what I love to do---tell stories, make people laugh, cry, FEEL something, and leave (hopefully) something good behind.

You are such a hero @Willie Garson! Thank you for the amazing work you do as an artist. I have to ask, what was the experience of being on Sex and the City like?

Sex and the City was a highly cherished period for all involved. We literally went from this tiny show all the way to the mountaintop. That it resonated, and continues to, with so many people is not only highly satisfying, but a real testament to the people involved, especially the writers and the crew.
