Hi! I'm Megan Davies. I'm a Nashville-based Alt-Pop, singer-songwriter. I'd say my unique sound has been influenced by a combination of commercial pop, indie-folk, and experimental rock.

I'm originally from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and I graduated from Belmont University, where I studied song-writing and classical guitar.

During the summer of 2013, I began uploading acoustic covers and mashups to YouTube – collaborating with both my sister, Jaclyn, and other artist friends in the Nashville community. That year, Sirius XM’s The Coffee House voted me and fellow artist Emily Hackett’s cover of Lorde’s “Royals” the Best Cover of 2013.

I'm excited that my creative stylings have garnered me over 157 million views and 1.1 million subscribers. The 3-song mashup “See You Again/ Love Me Like You Do/ Sugar” reached #1 on both the US and Global Spotify Viral 50 charts, and has over 50 million views on YouTube.

While I enjoy producing covers and mashups, my passion lies in writing and performing my own original music. My debut original project, Bad Poetry EP was released on July 28th.

Now's your chance to ask me anything! Please write your questions in the comments section below and I'll answer the questions live on Monday, January 15th at 4pm ET.

    Aloha Megan!

It's so great to have you here on Mogul--I've been such a huge fan of yours for a few years now. How have you managed the balance between quality and quantity when it comes to your work? I'd love to hear any hints of upcoming projects too (but I understand if you can't) haha.

Aloha! I’m always trying to find that balance. The hardest part of creative work is knowing when it’s finished. I’m a perfectionist and I wish I had an infinite amount of time to polish every video and performance, but that’s not realistic. So I try to set timelines for myself best I can, however if something doesn’t feel ready I’m not afraid to push a release date. So I guess that means I err on the side of quality.

And as far as new releases, I have two new original songs I’ve been trying out on tour this winter that I’m super pumped about! One is “Doesn’t Matter” and the other is “Moonlight.” Hope to release them online in the near future!

NYC is gonna be a blast!! I actually have a keyboardist/guitar player on the road with me right now, and it’s been so much fun to do bigger acoustic arrangements. Keelan Donovan (who’s in a bunch of my YouTube videos) will be playing as well, so you can expect a few covers from us!

Find out what you love to do, and then figure out how to make it a job. It’s one of the most rewarding things to do what you love every single day, and definitely makes it easier to put in the 10,000 hours.

I swear by getting 8 hours of sleep.  Even if I have insane amounts of work to do, I always prioritize that.  For me it's the only way I can keep up with a crazy schedule.  Outside of that, working out is helpful on both the mental and physical side of things, and I try to do that most mornings.

Thanks Bethany!  I'd love to be able to fill a theater in every city.  That's one of my goals.  The YouTube love I've received has been one of the most rewarding and unexpected parts of my career so far, but there is nothing quite like playing live and I hope to keep growing it.

The most personal songs for me are always the hardest to write.  So I'd say "Only Us" and a newer song called "Doesn't Matter" were the hardest for me.

Since I do mashups and covers with my friends and my sister, they're more like fun projects than anything - sort of reminiscent of jamming with high school friends.  Original music is definitely more personal in that it sometimes requires sitting in a room by myself and thinking deeper about things.  So two very different processes, but both rewarding in the end.

I’m awful at it! It’s probably the hardest part of what I do and I’m still learning how to process everyone’s opinions. I think the only way I know how to manage it is to separate my personal life from my work, and try not to mix up my own personal self-worth with that of my creative work.

What's been your biggest obstacle that you've had to overcome? Is it something that you still battle with from time to time? If it is, how do you manage that?

My biggest obstacle happened a few years back in college. I injured a nerve in my left elbow and had to have surgery. It affected my hand strength and I couldn’t hold down guitar strings. I was a guitar major and ended up having to switch majors during my junior year. At the time it felt like the end of the world. I’ve since gained my hand strength back, but it still poses issues from time to time. However, if anything it gave me an appreciation for my music abilities and a realization of how quickly I could lose it all. I started to diversify my skill set, playing around with recording audio and filming/editing videos. I guess some things happen for a reason!

Both those things are super hard!  As far as balancing a day job, I think finding a job that isn't too draining is important.  In my case I worked in a cubicle, copy/pasted in excel, and listened to music all day long - by the time I got home I was ready to go.  But I don't think I could have done that if the job was stressful or intense.  And as far as the salary transition, it's scary to suddenly be independent. But after that first month, when I realized that I entirely supported myself as a self-employed musician - it was one of the best feelings.

Nashville can be intimidating at first since there are so many musicians. But I like to think being around others working hard encourages you to work in the same way.  There's a hustle that I'm not sure I would have adopted had I not moved there from Pennsylvania.

As far as breaking through - my story is a bit different than other musicians there - but having hard work payoff is one of the most rewarding experiences.  And I'm thankful everyday for the place that I'm in right now.

I have a lot friends in Nashville who are music artists, and I can say all of our music industry experiences have been very different. I've had friends who've signed to deals, and friends who consistently receive no's. I feel like I've taken a bit of a back door in the music industry, and it's almost like I skipped the line. I didn't give anyone a chance to say yes or no to me. So basically it's different for everyone, but explore all options.  And if someone says no, don't give up. Look for a back door.

So kind! And so encouraging too. I could tell they both understood how hard it is to pursue your dreams, and I felt like they just wanted to send positive energy towards anyone working towards that. It was a cool experience.

For me, most of my songs normally start on music side of things.  So I'll come up with a chord progression and let that dictate the emotion and the story.  From there I'll figure out what it is I'm trying to say.

As far as writers block, it's tricky but I feel like writer's block stems from having the wrong creative input/output ratio.  Meaning if you're having trouble with your output (writing songs) increase your input (read books, watch movies, listen to albums).  That's my current theory!

So great to have you! If an organization ever wanted to partner with you by commissioning you to write a song for a powerful cause, what would be the best next step for this? Would it be best to contact your manager? Thank you so much in advance!
