Hi! I'm Emily Warren. I'm a singer and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum songwriter. I've written songs for several high-profile pop artists, including The Chainsmokers, Frenship, Sean Paul, Melanie Martinez, and Shawn Mendes.

I'm from Manhattan where I was raised on the Upper West Side. While in high school at Trinity School, I performed regularly with my band called Emily Warren & the Betters. A single from The Betters EP, Not at All, was featured on the soundtrack of MTV's short-lived series, Skins.

For college, I went to the NYU Tisch School/Clive Davis Institute in 2011 and was offered a songwriter's contract with Prescription (Rx) Songs in 2013.

After signing with Dr. Luke, the Betters disbanded and I spent a year in LA. I co-wrote "Masterpiece", the third single on pop artist Jessie J's album, Sweet Talker. The song debuted at #30 on the US Mainstream Top 40 and #65 on the US Billboard Hot 100 as well as certified gold in Australia and New Zealand.

Following the success of that release, I eventually teamed up with my longtime friend and collaborator Scott Harris to co-write four songs from Shawn Mendes' platinum-selling album, Handwritten: "Strings", "Aftertaste", "Air", and "Lost".

2015 marked the release of The Chainsmokers' and Tritonal's "Until You Were Gone", which featured my lead vocals. I was excited it received a lot of acclaim, including from The Chainsmokers themselves who called me "one of the best songwriters and vocalists that they had ever worked with".

Soon after that, I teamed up again with Scott Harris and together we wrote "Don't Let Me Down" with The Chainsmokers, which reached number 3 and went on to reach triple platinum in the United States. Don't Let Me Down was also nominated for a Grammy in 2017 for Best Dance Recording which it won for.

I've loved continuing to write and sing for The Chainsmokers, and I'm excited to have recently released my debut single "Hurt By You", which crossed 1 million streams within two weeks!

Now's your chance to ask me anything! Please write your questions in the comments section below and I'll answer the questions live on Thursday, June 8th at 5pm ET.

Thanks for having me, Bethany! I think my best possible advice would be to do what you love. Even if what you love is something that seems small or unrealistic. I think that if you follow your passion it will take you places, and if you're doing what you love every day is a good day.

My favorite part about being an artist it the opportunity to share my story with people who may be experiencing similar things and helping them feel less alone. Music has helped me in this way so many times, it's nice to be able to return the favor. My least favorite part is that there are never enough comps to get my friends and family into shows ;)

Hey Cara! I am lucky to say that I've really stood my ground in uncomfortable situations. I think it's way more important to do what you feel is right and what makes you feel good even when someone is telling you otherwise. I have at times missed out on "opportunities" because I didn't agree with them morally but making the decision that you are most comfortable with is something you will never regret.

Hey Dannah! I haven't experienced direct sexism myself, but the sexism I see in the music industry exists in lyrics written by men for female artists. I think we are desensitized to sexist and demeaning lyrics and I am sometimes shocked by things I hear on the radio that little girls are singing along to that don't make us flinch. I think as songwriters we have a responsibility to put good messages out into the world and that is very much my motive personally.

My surroundings absolutely have an impact on my writing, which is the main reason I move around so much. One of the main factors is that the people you encounter in the studios in LA are vastly different from the people you encounter in London, and likewise with New York. But beyond that, I always get inspired from walking into pubs in London or riding the subway in New York or being on the beach in LA. Moving around keeps things fresh and interesting.

Hey Stacie! Success to me is not at all measured in numbers, but measured in how proud you are of the work. I've written songs that have fallen super under the radar that are some of the songs I'm most proud of. But the fact is, I wake up every day and get to do what I love. THAT to me is success.

Hey Carol! It seems to me like music is taking an incredibly positive shift back to storytelling and lyric-based music. I think nowadays you really need to be saying something different, honest, or vulnerable in order for the song to really connect with people. I would imagine it has something to do with what's going on in the world right now - people always turn to art in times of darkness and it's really wonderful seeing that reflected in the movies/music etc that are coming out.

Hi Rebecca! The beautiful thing about music is it's created literally all over the world. What's important is that you are comfortable, inspired, and surrounded by people you like to work with. I've been fortunate enough to make music in cities all over the world and they all have different positives.

I often hear that many talented artists enter the music industry by writing songs for other artists, kind of like "paying your dues." How long have you seen yourself and other songwriters do this before releasing music personally?

Hey! For me personally the experience of writing with other artists became a passion and not just "paying my dues". I find it incredibly satisfying to help other artists get their stories out, and take part in that process. I decided to put my own music out because it felt like I had a story to tell and finally knew how to tell it.

I think it's best to start with a conversation. Everyones got something on their mind and you can find that by creating a comfortable space and having an honest conversation. Once you start talking, it becomes pretty apparent what the central point is, and that is the concept. After I land on a concept I like to put that somewhere in the chorus, and then use each verse to get to that same chorus in two different ways. Then the bridge (the fun part) is when you can come at the idea from a totally different angle.

Hey Susan! To be honest, being a female has in many ways been an advantage for me in this field. Since there are not a lot of females doing songwriting, I think female artists are pretty relieved to have another girl in the room. My policy has always been to not view being a female as a disadvantage - I never walk into a room and think of myself as the girl in the room, just view myself as an equal. This mentality has helped me immensely.
