Hi! I’m Diana O’Brien – CMO of Deloitte, mom of triplets, an autism advocate, and wellbeing enthusiast. I’ve had so many roles in my life and during my 30 years with Deloitte and all of them have taught me more than I could have imagined.

For me, success comes down to three things: having a growth mindset which allows you to keep learning, growing, improving; making an impact that matters not just for others but for yourself, and being grateful - for everything, the good and the bad.

Somewhere around 30, I looked back on my life and all of my experiences and defined what I thought my purpose was – to create environments where people can be their best selves and I doing everything in my power to lift others up.

Every decision I have made since, has been through that lens. I believe, that passion echoes throughout my life whether I am a CMO focused on driving growth and creating world-class experiences for our clients, or serving as an advocate for people with autism as the chairman/founder of IMPACT Autism. It flows through my other passions as a foodie, a wine lover, but...know I’ve never had a cup of coffee!

I’m excited to be a part of this platform – so truly ask me anything. I’ve had some wonderful successes but also made a lot of mistakes and both shaped my path. Nobody gets where they are by themselves, so let’s start talking and helping each other grow. Please write your questions in the comments section below and I’ll answer them live Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 1:30 pm ET.

When I was young, I wanted to be a ballet dancer and a Supreme Court Justice. Today, I see it a bit different, it’s not the job, or the role, it’s what you are – Change Agent, developer of people, dreamer of ideas, and role model for others.

Coding helps you understand patterns, connections, and how technology trends are shaping the world. Those are invaluable skills for you to build on. Just like coding, you lead by doing--practice, ask for feedback and practice again.

I'm currently a Harvard student, and I recently read about Deloitte's new Inclusion groups instead of the usual employee networks  -- and I thought it was so brilliant! How long did that initiative take to plan out and introduce into your organization?

Thanks for taking an interest in our new inclusion council concept! Deloitte has been helping shape corporate America’s inclusion landscape since 1993, when it became the first professional services organization to establish women’s and diversity initiatives. In addition to traditional employee networks or programs – what we call business resource groups (BRGs) – these inclusion councils actively seek new and innovative ways to foster connections around areas of common passions and interests across groups and demographic lines. Groups of professionals from local BRG chapters (including women, men, LGBT, under-represented minorities, and veterans), wellness groups, and community impact groups have been catalysts in standing up these councils over the past couple of years.

Our people have continuously provided feedback that their experiences and diverse backgrounds are much broader than the more categorical organization of the BRGs, and we believe by including all interested people in our inclusion councils, we will drive diversity of thought and create a more inclusive culture.

I look for people who have followership and people who have passion and interest aligned to a purpose. They don’t necessarily have to ready right now, but there should be evidence that they’ll grow into a leadership role. And they need to believe in their own potential.

Agency experience is great. In-house experience is equally important. To me though, it's not about any one experience, it's about how you combine all of your experiences to be a problem solver, a growth driver, a customer champion, and an innovator.

Non-profits have to take advantage of social media, find business partners to help them scale, and use the influencer community—activate the people who are affected by or contribute to or benefit from the organization as brand ambassadors.

I agree, and this rapid change makes it an incredible time to be a CMO. At Deloitte, we are transforming our marketing function, we are hiring and building new capabilities, and we are embedding new digital technologies into our work processes.

But I think that one fundamental thing has stayed the same in B2B marketing—relationships matter, and they are what continues to drive our growth.

Dear Diana, how did you meet your husband? I'm currently 35 years old, and worry that I may be working too much, leaving little time to meet someone great. At the same time, I love my job incredibly and think that perhaps I might meet that special someone through work one day. It's an ongoing struggle I face.

A colleague told me I was working too much and that I needed some work-life balance. She literally pointed to the guy walking down the hall and said “how about that guy?” I didn’t think he was my type. She later set us up and it turns out I was wrong!

First, I think you need to find your purpose and what you’re passionate about. That will help inform the skills you want to acquire and experiences you should look for in an internship. Then, use your career center—you have great resources at Stanford.

And I wouldn’t say I have a favorite movie because I love so many! Movies are a great escape with my children and husband.

Thanks--that's a wonderful compliment. I don’t think being kind translates into being soft.

Sometimes when you’re passionate about driving growth and not afraid to have tough conversations you can be perceived as harsh. The key is to be unafraid of what people think. If you take responsibility to create an environment where people feel empowered, supported, and safe to take risks and even make mistakes, you are kind.

I think you need to use your resources around you – visit your career center, talk to your professors, talk to other students that are ahead of you in your degree program. And go to any events or networking sessions your school offers. You never know where you can make a meaningful connection.

As far as getting your MBA, I think you’d be better served with some real-life business experience prior to getting your MBA. There’s so much you can learn in a few years on the job that will help you while getting your MBA.

Hello @Diana O'Brien , I'm Megha Shah from Kolkata, India.

I'm currently in my final year of graduation, pursuing B. Com. Honours with specialisation in Marketing and will be going ahead for my MBA next year - again with specialisation in Marketing. I wish to pursue International and Digital Marketing in future.

What golden words of wisdom do you have for me as someone who has already made it big in Marketing with such a great company? And is there anything that I should particularly keep in mind on my journey as a student?

No not at all! I started out as a consultant and really loved it. I thought that’s what I would always do, as working with clients is very aligned to my purpose. The role of CMO for me is still very connected to where I got my start—I now get to be the voice of all of Deloitte’s clients.

So my favorite daily task? Meeting with clients.

For me it’s not about the money or the role, it’s living in alignment with my purpose, which is for me to create the space for others to thrive.  When I do that, I feel successful. I will say about three years ago, I had a big aha moment. I realized that I wasn’t in my purpose. And if I didn’t spend time creating the right environment, experience, and connections for me to thrive, I wouldn’t have the wellbeing to continue to do it for others.  That changed a lot of things for me.

For me, every mistake I've made has been an opportunity to grow. I’d say some of the most memorable mistakes are not standing up for people/standing on the sidelines when I should have, or doubting myself, lacking confidence, and not sharing when I could have contributed. It can be as small as not getting back to someone, to bigger mistakes that disappoint others and more importantly, disappoint yourself.

We are all changed by our mistakes. They are our own story and make us – us. Value the lessons you learn through your mistakes.

When I thought about my purpose I looked at the times I was immersed and absorbed in what I was doing. Time seemed to disappear. I combined that with the question "What do I want the people I care about to say about me when I'm gone?" Marrying those two things will allow you to find your best self and live your purpose.

I’ve walked into many conference rooms where male leaders didn’t extend their hand to shake mine. And after a few times, I made sure I was the one reaching out for a handshake regardless of where I was. You have to take responsibility and be a presence in the room.

Personally, I’m really excited about continuing to support and expand the program our foundation, Impact Autism, is sponsoring at the University of Cincinnati: http://cech.uc.edu/education/ats.html

It’s so important for young adults with autism to be in an inclusive environment that offers lots of options and choices.

Professionally – there are two initiatives I am really excited about.  1) expanding our CMO Program, which is focused on helping other CMOs navigate the complexities of the role and tackle challenges through experiences such as transition labs for new CMOs and a NextGen Academy for rising stars. 2) undertaking the digital transformation of our firm. We’re looking for opportunities to innovate with every touchpoint we have with our clients and internally with our employees.

Hi Diana! When in a discussion, how do you know when to 'stick to your guns' or concede, especially in regards to coming up with new ideas? I often feel like I don't give myself enough credit, so I don't go too far defending my own ideas. Do you have any advice for this?

For me it’s less of “sticking to my guns” and more about getting others invested. In my experience that happens two ways. #1. You listen to others and build upon their idea with your new thinking; or # 2. Others listen to you and you allow them to build upon your idea with new their thinking. Both involve listening and letting go so the idea can get stronger. If you create an environment where people know their ideas will be heard and they will have the opportunity to build upon other good ideas, then you have a formula for success for everyone. That said, if you aren’t part of an organization that wants to build new ideas, I would change where I work.

    Hi @Diana O'Brien ,

Fellow Cincinnatian here!  I grew up in Montgomery and attended Ursuline Academy. Curious - what's your typical order at Skyline?

On a more serious note - was there anything that impacted you at a young age (such as a book or movie) that you think influenced your drive to success?

Well first and foremost congratulations, Ursuline Academy is a fabulous school. And I’m a four-way onion. I’d love to know what your order is!

To answer your second question, I was blessed by having all four of my grandparents through college and that was one of the most important influences on me. They were all so unique – one a neurosurgeon, an architect, a nurse, head of the PTA – but family was always first for them. They taught me so much about servant leadership, hard work, finding the good in your challenges, and laughing at yourself. I’m a much better person for having known all of them.

Marketing is going through a remarkable transformation. It’s driven by digital, technology advancements, and globalization. If you’re the person responsible for making sure your brand is perceived as being the best, managing all the variables is difficult. But the hard work is also the most exciting and rewarding part! In a dynamic, always changing environment there’s room for new ideas and ways of thinking. Having a brand that can and will be measured against the best experiences and best people in the world is inspiring.
