Mikaela Katrina Miss Brazil 2016 and Model

All questions will be answered by Mikaela Katrina on September 14th at 7:30pm ET.

Hi - I'm Mikaela Katrina. I'm the current Miss Brazil.

In addition to being Miss Brazil, I'm also a model. But there's more to my story than fashion shoots and beauty pageants. I was actually in the foster care system until I was emancipated at the age of 17. Prior to that, I had to deal with an abusive father and a mother who suffered from PTSD (my mom's doing much better now - but it was rough for a while). My mission now is to inspire others and give young people who were in my situation a sense of hope.

Some fun facts about me: I'm an equestrian. I love to ride! I am absolutely obsessed with Disney movies. I know every lyric to every song. And I am double jointed in my hands and my toes and can make a clover shape with my tongue!

Now's your chance to ask me anything! Please write your questions in the comments section below and I'll answer the questions live on Wednesday, September 14th.

It's part of Mogul's new interactive Q &A sessions, Ask A Mogul Anything.

Come on and ask me *anything* ... about being Miss Brazil ... modeling ... and my mission to help others who went through the foster care system.

What's the best advice you have for girls who want to be models? It seems like an industry that you have to be very careful. Should parents always be there in meetings? What's a good age to get started?

Hey Sarah! The best advice I have for girls that want to be models is: get out there and go do it! Of course, it takes prep, and you have to be in pretty good shape most of the time, but if you're taking care of yourself and nurturing your dreams, the next step is putting yourself out there. I know it can be scary, but trust me, it's worth it. A lot of agencies have days where they allow walk-ins for new models, so do your research, find some agencies in your area (Google is your friend) and go! You can also sign up on websites like Model Mayhem to meet some photographers and shoot a portfolio to show the agencies when you show up! You don't have to be careful if you're doing work through an agency - they are extremely professional. It is usually outside of the agency where the grey area starts. So be careful! If you are under 18, I recommend a parent attending meetings, and you can get started whenever you'd like. I see some girls that have been modeling since 9 years old!

Did you always want to model? What's a normal day like for you? I've never been to South America but I am so curious about what it's like. What's the best meal to try there?

Yes, I have wanted to model since I was very young. A normal day usually consists of me hanging out at home in my PJs or relaxing by the water (when I'm not working). When I'm working, depending on call time (could be 4am) I shower, head over to set, let the makeup and hair artists work their magic, have a couple of hours of play time, and then celebrate with an amazing meal and a glass of wine once we're done! I always include the gym somewhere in there too! I live in Los Angeles currently, but when I go to Brazil, I'm a meat lover, so the steak pretty much blows my mind. Plantains are amazing, and so are the cheese stuffed breads. Mmmmm!

What is dating like when a model and Miss Brazil? Do you find it difficult to find men who are genuine and that don't have ulterior motives for wanting to get to know you?

Are you a fan of Narcos? :-) What would you like to do after modeling? Or is it what you envision doing as a whole career long-term?

Hey Kelly! I've watched a couple of episodes, and did really enjoy Narcos, but I'm not a huge television watcher, funny enough. I enjoy it when I'm around it, but I'll never personally go and turn the TV on to watch a show. I'm usually too busy doing other things! I prefer to spend my time outdoors, exploring, or learning something new.

Hey Bethany! The most difficult part for me would probably be having to wear heels for 14 hour days! Eeek! Right now, I am in training for the Miss Global crown - a crown for the entire world, not just countries, and we've been having pageant boot camp! You don't get much rest, and as you just read, sometimes your days are quite long, but it's all so worth it in the end. Just being a part of such an amazing group of girls is the experience of a lifetime, and I've definitely made some friends for life!

I would also say the best part is what I can do with my image and publicity. As I've mentioned in a comment above, I'm not just in the pageant world for the glitz and glam. I want to help inspire others by telling my story - you can read more about it here: https://www.gofundme.com/missbrasil2016

What's it like competing in beauty pageants? Are you ever self-conscious about how you look?

Heya glasshalffull100! It's pretty fabulous! The girls are all actually very sweet and helpful, unlike what most people think. Of course, there are some bad eggs (as in with everything - I'm sure you all don't like everyone at work) but the majority become your friends for life. I think being self-conscious is something everyone deals with, whether they'd like to admit it or not. It's totally fine, and totally human. You just need to make sure you rationalize, and know you're beautiful no matter what, just for being alive! You've only got one life to live, don't waste it worrying about how you look! Have fun, be yourself, and enjoy the ride.

Hi miranda444! Yes, I do, and it is still my favorite thing in this world. Horseback riding has gotten me through so much, and it is honestly (in my opinion) the best thing on this planet! I'm actually getting involved in volunteering for equine therapy for the mentally and physically disabled. It's one of the most rewarding things I've ever done... and one of the most effective!

Hi booklover423! Yes! In the industry, you're not really allowed to talk too much about things before they're released, but I do have a project that should be coming out in within the next year (they're working on it's editing now) with Malcom McDowell and Dean Jagger from Game of Thrones. Really excited for that one!

Thank you so much for taking questions. It's great to have you be a part of Ask A Mogul Anything. Can you tell us more about your experience with the foster care system? What do you think needs to change - or what should more people be aware of?

Hello Mary! Thank you! Sure, my personal experience wasn't great. The facility I was sent to was home to about 30 girls and had about 12 small rooms, had some horribly verbally abusive staff, was bed-bug and roach infested, and chaos was always about (you put 30 girls locked together anywhere for a couple of days, and you'll see what I'm talking about). There would be fights pretty much daily, the girls would pull horrible, nasty pranks on each other (including attempting to light one girl's hair on fire), and the staff would feed us extremely fatty and oily foods so we would gain weight so when people would come check the facility, they would think we were well fed. Staff also would threaten to give our judges (being in the foster system, you do have a court case opened up on you that is closed once you exit) horrible reviews on us if we weren't on our best behavior when people would be sent to come check on the facility. Honestly, it was pretty nightmare-ish. I believe we need to screen the staff we hire for these facilities with a full-blown evaluation to make sure their hearts are in the right place, and I believe there needs to be more TLC involved. Most of the time, the girls were treated like robots - having orders barked at them, and not really given much attention at all. I'm a firm believer in TLC, and I know it can help heal and take the chaos out of anything. You can never have too much tender love and care!

Hey Maddy! It's great, I absolutely love it! It' a job full of having fun & being silly - and even though the hours are long, at the end of the day, it's so worth it. The people on set usually become friends of yours, too! Not sure exactly what you're referring to in regards to body image (there are a few subjects that could be grazed in that category) so if you'd like to clarify, I'd be happy to answer!

Thank you Sophie! What kept me going in foster care was my inner strength (even though some days I felt I had none) and faith of a brighter future. As a child in a foster care facility, things aren't always rainbows and butterflies, but you can choose to look at the negatives in life, or you can choose to look at the positives. I'm a strong believer in positive thinking, and my motto in life has always been "You can cry over spilt milk - or you can laugh at the situation, clean it up, and pour yourself another glass". Being stressed and worried only hurts yourself, nobody else, so why do it? Use that time to think of a solution, and if there is none, know you will get through it. We are all strong people - never forget that.

Hey Kevin! Thanks! Yes, you could definitely say that. My mom was a model in New York back in her day, so I would see her pictures and they really inspired me! She was such a talented model, and I wanted to create art the same way she did in pictures. But being a model definitely isn't the only thing I wanted to do! I've always been a very creative, outdoorsy, and business minded person, so it's no surprise I began to pursue acting, horseback riding (on a professional level), singing, and a career in the entrepreneurial world. I am also a charity fanatic, and really would like to help the world for the better, which is actually the main reason I joined the pageantry world. You can read a bit more of my story here: https://www.gofundme.com/missbrasil2016 and you'll see that being a beauty queen isn't just about the crown for me. It's about taking a stand, inspiring others to do the same, and making a change in the world. I feel like that is my main purpose in life.

Hi Namisha! Sure. So I'll start with this. I try to stay away from carbs and fried foods as much as possible, but I give myself one cheat day a week to indulge in whatever I like! My kryptonite is sweets - Nutella being my favorite. I could eat that stuff with a spoon! Other than that, I try to stick to leafy greens and protein. If you're trying to cut weight, you're not going to want to douse your food in sauces (unfortunately, they're usually pretty bad for you, besides the select few low-calory ones at Whole Foods) and just stick to the good ole natural flavor of things! It gets easier as you go, and spices are your friend. Eventually, you really start to like the real flavors of what you're cooking, and it becomes easy as pie! It's a learn-as-you-go process, definitely. I also give myself a good hour at the gym daily. I start off with some high-intensity training on an elliptical machine with a heavy incline and resistance for 20-30 minutes, and then head to free weights, kettlebell, and my favorite, the resistance bands! After, I treat myself to a quick dip in the pool or jacuzzi as a reward. I feel like it helps me relax after all I've just done! Oh! And last! I *love love love* protein shakes with green powder and a bit of a caffeine kick! That stuff really keeps me going in the mornings. I could honestly live off of that stuff!
