Alex Sharp Tony Award-Winning Actor for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
almost 3 years New York, NY, United States Conversation

All questions will be answered by Alex Sharp on September 12th starting at 3pm ET.

Hi - I'm Alex Sharp. I'm an actor.

I'm perhaps best known for being the youngest recipient of a Tony Award for Best Lead Actor in a play. (I won in 2015 for my portrayal of Christopher Boone in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time).

Some fun facts about me: I have three valid passports. (There are 12 valid passports in my immediate family). And I had to have my first pay check of my first job (for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) advanced a week because - get this! - I couldn't afford the subway to rehearsal. Talk about being a starving artist.

Now's your chance to ask me anything! Please write your questions in the comments section below and I'll answer the questions live on Monday, September 12th at 3 pm ET.

It's part of Mogul's new interactive Q &A sessions, Ask A Mogul Anything.

Come on and ask me *anything* ... about acting ... Broadway ... making it in New York!

Did you enjoy the Met Gala? What was the most amazing event you've attended thus far that made you think -- "Wow, this is surreal" ?

I have been very lucky to attend many an event that has made me say 'Wow, this is surreal"! Met Gala, both years, was INCREDIBLE, the art, to wander the museum with friends and no public masses and everyone dressed stunningly, is AMAZING. It's just a huge wild party in there, with many crazy occurrences! Nights I will never forget and always treasure!

Frank Langella, who I met through my dear friend Anna Wintour ... he has become a friend and mentor. We just went out to dinner lots! I read his hilarious book... dropped names. He is the oldest tony winner for actor in a play and i am the youngest so we bonded over that and got on well! There are others. All of whom i am very grateful too.

Oh thank you! Yes I have almost completed my first screenplay and am starting the long process of making it happen as a movie! Stay tuned! I'm excited about the film I am about to shoot called MONUMENTAL - Jeremy Irons is an acting hero of mine so I can't wait to work with him on that!

I'm looking forward to one movie in particular I am yet to shoot, but can't talk about it yet.... but it involves aliens. :0

Thank you very much Kathy. Heartbreak is always devastating, especially the first time it happens, but it never gets easy. The only thing that heals it is a healthy amount of self love and TIME Sending love to ya, and hoping your not dealing with that right now! But if you are, its ok, and you are beautiful and you ROCK!! X

Honor to be here. You are incredible. Thank you for having me. I love and believe in all you do. Good question... Ummm. I think in the savage industry that is entertainment, you have to make a mark, and that is hard to do, impossible in fact, without someone saying yes to you. So you have to make them say yes, which can take time, and always takes a great deal of work (or in some cases a phone call to uncle frank the producer- not an option for me or most) but most importantly its about being ready for the opportunity. And its daunting and pressure filled when given it. Now I feel more relaxed because people know I am serious about what I do, and enjoy life more because I can focus of the art form I love more than the hustle. With success problems change, the become more luxurious problems, but they are problems either way, that must be dealt with. Sometimes when the stakes are higher so is the pressure. But I am profoundly grateful to be where I am, and have the chance to continue to pursue my dreams. Upwards and onwards! Your support means the world to me.

Hey Kevin! I had many people I looked up to and many people actors or not, who inspired me. My good friend and amazing photographer Benedict Evans has taught me much over the years, he's kinda surrogate older bro in some ways. My dad taught me a lot growing up too. Pacino in films.... got me passionate about film acting at an early age. A woman called Rachel Vowels who ran a theater company for young people in England played a big part too. Taking up acting is always a ludicrous choice, but when you see the greats do it, its inspiring and drives you to continue! In more recent years, Viola Davis, Daniel Day-Lewis, Denzel Washington, Denise Gough, Danielle Brooks, Alex Breaux (especially in Red Speedo the off broadway play) etc etc.... seeing others nail it, always drive me forward! Thanks for your support man! Happy monday ! xxx

that varies massively - when on set, you tend to wake up around 4 or 5 am and get home at about 10 or 11 ! when not working, i fill my time with prepping for work, building furniture, getting involved with fashion designers I love, seeing art, watching movies, watching theater, watching people, writing, and the occasional awkward date that i inevitably will tank with my awkwardness

Thank you so very much! When you are in a show for a long time (like a year) the most important thing is to take care of yourself. Health wise and emotionally. Keeping it fresh is just being present and keeping the stakes high! It was not easy, but its about focus and passion I think.... and fun. Keep having fun! I think if you answer the question honestly with yourself - is this the most important thing in the world to me, and the answer you hear is YES and you know you have asked yourself honestly... my answer would be to die trying it aint easy. but what worth having is ?

Hi Sarah! I guess the odds statistically are slim, but then so are most odds in life. I would strongly advise to ignore this odds. Statistics are numbers NOT people. Your awesome. Beautiful. And talented. Focus on being you if you audition (or in any other life situation) because your the only person that is you, and as cliche as that is, its powerful and effective and TRUE. and remember Juilliard is just a school. If you don't get in, fuck em! You can find success and happiness in a billion different ways! Its a great school, but there are other choices xxxx

Lemme tell ya, I've had MANY failures. Contrary to how my life has been portrayed in the press ' recent graduate nails broadway ' or whatever, which made me look wayyyy cooler than I am. So many times I got knocked back not just in acting but in LIFE... I couldn't afford a sandwich for most of my life and thats the truth! How to move forward. Like a tank. Anything bad gets in your way, knock it out of the way and proceed. When you meet good folks on the road, lift them up and take them along with ya! (pack sandwiches, the journey is long)

Hi Alex! If you can work with anyone (director or actor), who would it be? Is there a specific reason if so? Also, if you were to take a month vacation, where would it be?

Hi! :) Can't say a favorite as they were so different. The hardest was TO THE BONE... I play a character who struggles with anorexia, and I had to lose a huge amount of weight for the role. Which was, I have to say, not very fun. But at the same time incredibly enlightening. I think I lost about 38lbs. I don't recommend it. How To Talk To Girls At Parties will be a blast - as will the others ! Cant wait for you all to see them!

Sometimes I was exhausted and sick, but still spoke to everyone because THAT is what theater is all about! I loved meeting the fans more than I can articulate. They are beautiful and wonderful and kept me going through an incredibly challenging year

Acting on stage vs film is VERY different and also ultimately the same. It's about truth, and about living in the characters skin. The only thing thats changed is the audience. In the play I had 1000 scene partners. In the films I have done you have 2. The other actor, and the camera. So you have to adjust your energy. But it's the same. In regards to your question about fame, thats quite a hard question to answer. I recognize that people know who I am, that sometimes people come up to me in the street or whatever, but experientially, I do not think of myself as famous, because a) that would be weird b) (and more importantly) I don't think that would be very productive in relation to me developing and improving as an actor

That's the hard part about acting. It's a great career and you use your amazing talent but it comes with a price! Just as long as you don't get to deep in the tabloids, I think you will be ok :) and occasionally hanging out with all of us regular people!

How do you deal as an actor with all the rejection without closing off your emotions so you can still tap into all of that and remain emotional and open?

Don't ever close anything off! The pain from rejection, and the damage it does to ones ego is just energy, and useful energy... I try and redirect anything I feel into acting. So the key I think is to always have something to work on. Always be watching people, taking notes, asking questions, reading plays, prepping things, writing, traveling, whatever!! Some of my best performances in Curious in my opinion were on days I had received terrible news, professional or personal, or had a migraine, or felt sick..... because putting everything no matter the cost (within reason.... don't die) into acting, is what acting IS! Pain is a tool! Rejection hands that tool to us. Always keep moving forward xxx

Alex, it's so great to have you take questions. What is the audition process like for you as an actor in New York? Do you still get nervous? And now that you've won a Tony, is life as an actor (or in general) any easier?

Hey! So great to chat with ya.... Auditioning is my least favorite thing in the world, aside from genocide and other more obvious travesties. But from an acting point of view, it's the worst because I don't feel it's anything much like real acting. Acting is creating a story, and arc, and a person that is real to live in for long enough time that it becomes real. Auditioning is a separate skill where you demonstrate potential for playing the part. I do less of it than I did before, but it still gives me shivers and anxiety. Winning a Tony has made certain aspects of my professional life easier, I have to say yes. I guess people like awards and take them seriously... so that is a happy help to me. Winning the Tony to me meant more to me on a personal level, of showing people who loved the show and related to Christopher... that anything was possible...
