What is Interaction Design and Why Do You Need It in Your Online Business

Interaction design is all about immersing your visitors into the story of your site. It allows you to reach users on a more personal level and to deeply involve them in the entire process of browsing. Interactive websites are more likely grab people’s attention and they help you communicate your message better. Researchers have proven that users are more influenced by interactive sites; they tend to stay longer and bounce less if the interaction is meaningful and interesting. It all comes down to having fun and increasing user experience.Ergonomically designed products bridge the gap between humans and systems; interaction design does the same with regards to humanity and the virtual world.

Technology advancements have made it increasingly easier for designers to incorporate interactive elements that grab user’s attention.Parallax scrolling, gesture recognition, swipes, and micro-interactions can all create those little moments that contribute to user experience and enhance it.

The true rise of the interactive design was brought about by smartphones.Designers were presented with a challenge, adapt or die. Smartphones changed how we navigate the web and included or thumbs and voice in the entire process. As technology moves forward it is doing interaction design is expected to become even more complex. HUDdisplays and wearable screens will definitely be a game changer, and it is going to be interesting to see how web design adapts to cope with them.

Good interaction design takes a few things into account. They are all geared towards one thing; improving the user experience. Badlydesignedinteraction features are painful and diminish user experience so you need to make sure that your design is not hurting you, instead of helping you out.

1.   Goal-oriented

Interaction design should always be goal oriented. Everything on your page needs to nudges the user towards the completion of their goal – or the goal you have planned for them, for that matter. To achieve this, it is important to know your users. You have to build user person's that will help you clearly define visitor expectations and use them to map out their potential experience on the page. He says that mapping user experience gives you a great insight into what your visitors are actually doing on the page and allows you to capitalize on their behavior and avoid common pitfalls that detract from the experience.

2.   Usability

Your team cobbled together a great new feature that you are excited to present to your users? Don’t rush it. Test it thoroughly before implementation. Buggy features are your worst enemy when it comes to interaction and communication. Most of the time users are not sure where the problem lies. If something is not working right, they might simply assume that it is not working for them, give up, and go somewhere else. By eliminating feature links you will eliminate user frustration, and that will go a long way towards improving their overall experience.

3.   Response time

The goal of interaction design is to narrow the gap between the human and the virtual. Your page should try to mimic human interaction as closely as possible. That is extremely difficult but failing to achieve that defeat the purpose of an interactive design. If your feedback is off and robotic, takes too much time or doesn’t take human communication patterns into account, then there is no point in trying. Make your design anticipate questions and raised eyebrows and offer solutions on the spot. Look at interaction design as a conversation. Rehearse it diligently and you will be able to present your users with a great personal experience.

It all boils down to making your site as warm and humane as possible.Good interaction design leaves the user with an impression that they are talking to a human being; great interaction design takes it to a whole new level and the conversation starts to resemble that between friends. Be on the lookout for new interaction trends in the coming year. With VR looming right around the corner it is safe to bet that some new design elements will be introduced that will take user experience to greater heights and you do not want to be left behind!
