I've been waiting for a female President ever since Shirley Chisholm (Rep. D-CA) ran for President in 1974. She was the first woman elected to Congress, and the first Black woman. She didn't win but she gave me hope. I have also waited for the Equal Rights Amendment since that time. In the two years that I've lived in Iowa, I have met women 10, 20, and 30 years older than me. They've waited their entire lives for thse events to occur.
This last election showed me just how deeply ingrained misogny and sexism are in our society. One of the key issues of global poverty is gender inequality. Another is inadequate or non-existent healthcare, especially for women. i am retired and spend a good portion of my time signing and posting petitions for various social issues such as education, poverty, animal abuse. and the environment.
When I was in Catholic high school, the Ursuline nuns instilled in me a sense of duty to my community, and the world at large. I feel we all have a responsibility to do everything we can to save animals from extinction, and making the world a better place for everyone. Pope Francis has said we are God's stewards on earth. Thus far. we've done a crappy job of it. We have to do better.
I am appalled at the way Republicans are trying to roll back women's rights. Banning abortion, defunding Planned Parenthood, keeping their wages less than men would get for the same job, all designed to subjugate women. Millions of women around the world marched in solidarity, and there are continuing marches scheduled for the near future. We will not go back and we will not be silent.
