Several years ago, if you went around the streets of Britain and asked people where they were going for their summer vacation, you can rest assured that the vast majority would have said the likes of Majorca, Costa Del Sol, Cyprus, Tenerife, or somewhere in the south of France. Nowadays, when you ask you will hear the likes of the Lake District, the Cotswolds, and Cornwall mixed in with the answers. This is because more and more people are opting for luxury holidays in the UK, as opposed to travelling overseas, and there are numerous reasons why. Below, we take a look at why staycations have become such a hit.
The impact of the recession is one of the main reasons why UK holidays are proving to be so popular. It may seem somewhat depressing to still be talking about the recession. Although the economy has recovered, it seems that we have become more discretionary with our spending. We hunt for value and have lower brand loyalty, which means that a larger number of people tend to look for the best deal when organising their yearly break, as opposed to sticking to the same tourist companies. It goes without saying that it is much cheaper to enjoy a holiday in the UK – you don’t have to worry about excessive travel expenses, being stung by the exchange rates, or spending what seems like a fortune on baggage.
It is also fair to say that, as a nation, we seem to be more appreciative of what our country has to offer. Since the Olympics in 2012, the sense of patriotism has been at an all-time high. We love our country, and we appreciate everything it has to offer, from the beautiful countryside, to the local, independent restaurants and businesses, to the wealth of leisure activities. We are realising that we don’t really need to go abroad, as everything we need is right here.
Aside from this, other reasons why England has become such an attractive destination is because of ease of access, geographical distance, and cultural familiarity. Life seems to be getting more and more stressful, and after a tiring week at work, most people don’t fancy a journey half the way around the world. Internal flights have also become much more regular, with many airlines offering flights from the South West to London, and London to Scotland, and so on. This makes city breaks a lot more viable.
Moreover, UK vacations allow for a lot more flexibility, allowing people to fit vacations into their busy work schedule. Typical 9-5 jobs are becoming few and far between, and fitting a holiday in with work is more challenging than it has ever been before. Of course, the recent terrorist attacks have also had an impact, with a lot of people reluctant to fly to certain locations due to the awful tragedies that have occurred over the past few years. A lot of people cancelled their vacations in the likes of France, Tunisia, and Egypt, and instead they opted for a break in the UK.
All things considered, there is a lot to love about luxury holidays in the UK, and let’s face it – we know how to do luxury well. If you are looking to book your next vacation, don’t overlook the incredible places around the country. You can enjoy a lavish stay without having to break the bank, and you don’t need to go through the hassle of going abroad, as everything you need is right on your doorstep.
