Environmental Media Association’s (EMA) first-ever EMA IMPACT Summit was nothing short of action-packed. Dynamic entrepreneurs, iconic entertainment figures, prominent investors, and philanthropic leaders including Jaden Smith, Mayor Garcetti, Van Jones, John Paul Dejoria, converged in one room at the Montage Beverly Hills to talk about what a community of passionate leaders can do to mobilize social action through entrepreneurship and socially responsible investing. The two day eco-conscious Summit was sponsored by Toyota Mirai, Calvert Research and Management, and the Montage Beverly Hills, Southern California’s first luxury LEED-certified hotel to reach Gold level certification. As part of the EMA IMPACT Summit’s mission to inspire future leaders who are committed to sustainable business models, Jaden Smith hosted the Summit’s “Future Innovator of the Year Challenge” where $50,000 was awarded to Ian Rosenberger of Thread for the company’s mission to end poverty by creating dignified jobs and responsible, high-quality fabrics. The challenge was a “Shark Tank”-like competition and featured competitors from think tanks, top universities, and incubators, all invited to present their concepts for solving the planet’s biggest issues. The challenge was sponsored by EMA Board Chair, David Margulies, CEO and Founder of New Pacific Realty.
Mayor Eric Garcetti talked about his Sustainable City Plan, one of the boldest such plans in the country, in his keynote address: “In the Sustainable City Plan, there are principles of conservation, clean energy, green jobs, transportation, livability, and job opportunity. The overarching purpose of the plan of course is to protect the environment, but it’s also to grow to our economy and offer hope to every Angeleno no matter where she lives, no matter what zip code she’s born into.” And he urged the audience, despite the current political climate, “don’t get depressed, and don’t despair. Because the power that we have is right in our hands. And the work that we have to do has always been just in front of us.”Jaden Smith, Investor in JUST Water and EMA board member, hosted the first round of the Future Innovator of the Year Challenge and became the latest member of the viral Shark Tank sensation Johnny Georges' fan club. When introducing the challenge, Smith said, “Innovation is really what we need more of from this world. When we can look around in our daily lives – when you’re going to work or going to school – and you can see the issues facing the world and come up with a solution to that issue in a sustainable way or invent something that you can put into the world, you can really make a difference for yourself and the people around you. That is something that’s extremely powerful.”
Additional speakers included: Actor and Activist and Zoe Lister-Jones; Terry Tamminen, CEO, Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation; Ray Halbritter, CEO and Head of The Oneida Nation; Rob Fishman, Co-Founder NICHE. Moderators included Josh Constine, Editor-At-Large, TechCrunch; Actors and Activists Wendie Malick, Daryl Wein and Frances Fisher; Robyn O’Brien, Founder of Allergy Kids; Peter Glatzer, Filmmaker and Co-Founder of SHFT.com; and Steve Schueth, President, First Financial Alliance Network.
