Facing Relationship Problems in Your Senior Years

A lot of happily married couples run into obstacles during their life together. Senior years bring certain changes in people’s lives and these changes reflect on relationships. However, this doesn’t mean that your marriage is falling apart. It simply means that you have to prepare well and tackle the challenges that arise with years.

Socialization

Big problem that might arise in later marital life is the social connection. Women realize the importance of socializing and they maintain stronger emotional ties to their friends and family. Men, on the other hand, don’t have such ties and usually depend on their wives to keep them socially integrated. Some husbands go too far in this dependency and expect their wives to focus only on them and neglect everything else. This type of relationship is not healthy for either of the spouses. Women might feel resentful if they don’t have enough personal time at their disposal. It’s important to maintain separate friendships for emotional well-being.

Spending more time together

Retirement can have both positive and negative effects on marriage. On one hand, you can spend more time together because you don’t have to go to work anymore. However, spending so much time together day after day can be challenging even in good marriages. You may discover that you and your spouse have different ideas about how you want to spend your time. One spouse may expect more involvement from the other in their preferred leisure activities. When this fails to happen, one might feel neglected. Make sure you have both separate interests and things that you enjoy doing as a couple. Pursue your own interests and hobbies and give each other enough space. Individual goals will help you maintain your own identity. Also, the time spent apart will give you something to talk about when you’re together.  Aging brings many situations difficult to tackle, but there’s a number of useful relationship tips that can help you maintain marital stability.

Household tasks

Before retirement, one spouse may have had a major role in caring for the household. In retirement, these roles change. For many women who have worked outside their home, this means that now they can share the house chores with their retired husbands. They expect their husbands to become more involved in the housework. When they fail to do so, women feel disappointed and start to bear resentment. Other women do not feel comfortable when husbands interfere in household management. Some husbands, especially those who had to direct people and events at their jobs, now continue to do so in their homes. This makes women feel as if their territory has been intruded upon. Deciding on who does which household chores in retirement is more important than couples realize. They need to discuss and mutually agree on division of tasks to prevent any possible conflicts.

Sex

Senior couples are often worried about their sex life. Common problems include declining levels of testosterone in both men and woman, short-lived erections, and vaginal dryness. Some medications used to treat high blood pressure are also known to reduce libido. Nerve damage caused by diabetes can also reduce chances of men to sustain an erection. There are ways to overcome these problems. It is important to visit a doctor if you have a medical problem. Testosterone supplements can increase men’s libido, while women can use lubricant gel to treat vaginal dryness.
