Do you have a personal mission statement? If not, why not? Traditionally, a mission statement is a tool an organization uses as part of the business planning process. It defines the reason they exist.
You don’t have to be a business to have a mission statement. If you are an entrepreneur, freelancer, or if you have a few important goals you want to meet over the next few years, you can benefit from taking the time to develop your personal mission statement.
Here are just a few ways a personal mission statement can add some golden touches to your personal brand.
- What do you want to be?
- Who do you want to become?
- What life do you want to be leading in the next 2 – 3 years?
If there is a gap between where you are and where you want to be, a simple and effective exercise is to create a Personal Mission Statement.
What exactly is a personal mission statement? A personal mission statement gives you a sense of purpose. It helps to define who you are and how you want to live.
Why is it important?
It pushes you to focus. It gives you a firm foundation as you pursue your life goals. It also simplifies your decision making processes. When you make decisions based upon your personal mission statement, it is easier to be in total alignment in your life. It also holds you accountable for your behavior and actions.
It’s a Process of Self Discovery. Personal mission statements help you reflect upon your life and help you get to know yourself as you discover your sense of purpose in life. As you contemplate deeply within yourself, you create a self-empowering epicenter that gives you a clear lens through which you can see the world. You can then refocus that lens on how you relate to your world.
Don’t Be Alarmed if it Changes. Creating a mission statement takes deep self-analysis and vigilant exploration. As you create your mission statement, it may take a few weeks to make sure you are truly comfortable with it. And as you grow, your mission statement will evolve as well. That’s why it’s crucial to review it regularly to not only make sure you are following it but to know when it needs to be updated as you have additional insights and changing circumstances.
