It is not fun to have problematic skin.
Growing up, I always covered my face in makeup but really I would have loved to be that natural beauty who looked great without a drop of foundation.
I have had acne and uneven skin for as long as I can remember. I thought that this would go away as an adult!
But no, I am in my twenties and still dealing with it. I have probably tried every type of acne treatment under the sun and sure, some things have worked but I never got the results that I wanted and nothing was ever permanent.
Obviously, I cannot afford some kind of crazy dermatological treatment with lasers and microdermabrasion like the celebrities, so I set out to find a skin care routine which I would be perfect for daily use and make my skin great once and for all.
I find that with my temperamental skin, it is hard to find a moisturizer that will keep my skin from getting dry and flaky but not make my face oily and break out.
I decided to give jojoba oil a try because I wanted to start using only natural products on my face.
I had tried all of the harsh chemicals in the world to clear up my acne and give me the perfect skin and that didn’t work, so I am going the au naturel route.
I had been hearing that jojoba oil had been good for treating acne but as anyone with bad skin probably is, I was weary about using oil on my face.
But this stuff is awesome. I use this after using the clay face mask and cleansing my face.
It is dense with nutrients that heal blemishes, treat infected acne, chapped dry skin, help rashes and rosacea, and even work to repair sun spot damage.
The oil also helps treat cysts, which I sometimes suffer from cystic acne, works for psoriasis, keratosis, and even sunburn.
All it takes is a few drops of the oil massaged into your face after washing so it absorbs the most moisture.
This 4-ounce bottle will last months if you are just using it for your face.
Leven Rose Organic 100% Pure Cold Pressed Unrefined Natural Jojoba Oil $13.27
Choosing a facial cleanser has always been tricky for me to choose. I would always go for the drying, extremely harsh washes or scrubs because I thought that was what would give me clear skin.
However, I have found that since using the natural products, my skin has been better in general but especially seems to be reacting well to this soft, gentle mousse cleanser by Avene.
It is a soap-free cleanser that removes makeup, leaves skin matte, and removes dirt and oils.
The ingredients are silicone-free, paraben-free, hypoallergenic, and non-comedogenic.
This stuff seriously leaves my skin feeling smooth, soft, and clean without drying it out.
Eau Thermale Avène Cleansing Foam $20.00
This Aztec Clay mask is seriously the secret cure for everything. On top of using this to clean out your pores and extract excess oils from your face, you can use this clay for body wraps, clay baths, rashes, insect bites, and foot soaks.
This is literally just a pound of 100% natural calcium bentonite clay. It has not additives, fragrances, or animal products.
The package says that you can mix this clay with either water or apple cider vinegar, but I highly recommend using apple cider vinegar.
I’ve tried to mix it with water and it just never seems to come out to be the right consistency. The clay should be thick but smooth enough to spread evenly on your face.
Leave it on for about ten minutes. You will feel your face start to tighten and pulsate as the clay dries. That means it is working!
Rinse the clay mask off with lukewarm water.
Your face may be a little pink afterward but it should subside within five to ten minutes.
Your pores will feel cleaner and tighter with every use. You don’t have to use the clay mask every day, in fact, everyday use might be a bit irritating if you have sensitive skin.
I recommend using the clay mask about three times a week, depending on the severity of your skin issues.
Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Deep Pore Cleansing $10.70
Facial sprays have become my new favorite thing. I am obsessed.
You probably don’t need both the Avene and the Mario Badescu sprays, although they both have different ingredients, and I just like using them.
I would suggest picking the one which would help your specific skin needs the most if you are only going to buy one.
Eau Thermale Avene Spring Water $18.50
The Avene Thermal Spring Water is an amazingly smooth mist that you can spray on your face, in your hair, on your body, or wherever to soothe and soften, minimize skin sensitivity, and provide anti-oxidant protection.
This is a great product to use during the winter when your skin is feeling dry and flaky but it will never clog your pores or make you feel greasy like a thick moisturizer would.
Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe Herbs and Rosewater $14.00
The Mario Badescu Facial Spray contains aloe herbs and rosewater for a pleasant pick me up spritz in the middle of the day.
The hydrating spray helps to sooth tight and uncomfortable skin, it won’t smudge your makeup so you can easily spray it on top throughout the day. I always keep one of these sprays at my desk.
Plus, aloe and rosewater have proven to be beneficial when used on acne-prone skin.
It is safe for all skin types and won’t irritate so it is great for sensitive skin.
Mario Badescu Drying Lotion $17.00
This definitely is not recommended for everyday use, it is called drying lotion and will work great for those times when you have something important coming up and a zit or a pimple pops up out of nowhere (pun intended).
Khloe Kardashian recommended it last year on her website khloewithak.com and I tried it afterward. It honestly works!
The only thing is you can’t pick or pop your pimple first or else it won’t work. It is not meant to be applied to open skin.
You take a cotton swab and dip it into the liquid and spread it evenly across the blemish. Leave it to dry overnight or for a few hours and it will be SIGNIFICANTLY smaller or gone by the next day!
All in all, I think the main thing I learned was that these natural products may not be as cheap as the acne treatments you will find in the drug store, but they are all natural and you don’t want to be putting all those chemicals on your face!
Plus, my skin has been reacting so much better to the organic, natural products it is insane. I think I’m glowing.
It has taken me a long time to find the perfect acne skin care routine for everyday use but these products have proven to be totally effective.
I would recommend washing your face twice a day, using the oil twice a day, spritzing with a facial mist throughout the day, and using the clay mask three to four times a week.
Plus, try not to clog your face up with tons of makeup! I love makeup too, but for everyday use try to use a light BB cream or a mineral powder makeup and wash your face when you get home every day!
Do you have an acne skin care routine that has worked great for you? Would you try out this acne skin care routine for your problem skin?
