Howtoaddfreelanceworktomyresume?

8mo Kolkata, West Bengal, India Question

Hello Moguls,

I provide various freelance services, such as content writing, content marketing, social media marketing, email marketing, digital marketing, research and development, project creation such as due diligence reports etc. I've had clients from all over India, as well as from USA, UK, Germany, UAE and Afghanistan. I started working in November 2015 but really accomplished well in 2016.

Since I'm a student looking at a lot of great prospects in future, I wish to add my experience as a freelance service provider to my resume .

Could you help me out and tell me exactly how how I should go about with it? I would really appreciate it.  :)

I receive all of the resumes that come into our office for hiring (we are a VERY small PR firm, so we have a lot of resumes with freelancing on them come through our doors!) Most often, freelancing is simply formatted just like the rest of the resume, but when listing the position, include freelance there. "Freelance writer" or "Freelance research and developer" etc. Just because you didn't work in the actual office doesn't mean your work experience is less valuable, even to an employer who may not be familiar with the setup of freelance positions. Just treat it as normal as possible - and when asked, simply articulate the nature of your arrangement. One other piece of advice - quantify anything possible on your resume. If you wrote a series of stories for a content marketing gig, state how many. If you think you impacted the company's bottom line in some way, give it a number (i.e. - Increased social media following by 20% in 6 months). This is a quick and easy way to show your impact without having to get too wordy. And for freelancing purposes, a good way to show that you made an impact with your work regardless of being full-time or not. Best of luck!

Hey Megha, this is a great question! As an HR person, I can recommend the following article that's super accurate and very helpful. Hope this helps. https://www.thebalance.com/how-to-list-freelance-jobs-on-a-resume-with-examples-3962844

I'm not sure how to answer this question because my time as a freelancer turned into a job quite fast but what I've heard is that you basically treat it as a normal job but you highlight the reason why you chose this path and what you learned from this experience (new skills in addition to the ones you strengthened). Really interesting question though :)

Hey Gabriela, Thank you so much for the advice. Will definitely keep this in mind. In India, freelancing isn't as popular as it is in most other parts of the world, particularly for a 19-year-old college student. The blogging trend is still new here and something that most people have undertaken. Thus, I feel this would really help me stand out from the crowd. Really appreciate your advice and will definitely try to incorporate it :)

Sorry I couldn't help but I do have some friends I could turn to for a piece of advice. I'll ask them and get back to you :) The fact that it's still quite new will give you an advantage so don't stop - I too started doing internships almost 10 years ago (I was about your age) and they really stirred my resume in the right direction. You need patience and dedication

Hey! So I talked to a couple of friends and they said that adding your freelance work in an attachment would be a good idea. However, if you have had more freelance gigs than full-time positions, it would be better to start with the freelance experience and then write about your traditional employment history. Hope this helps!

A great platform for just such a situation is LinkedIn. Not only can you do as Paige suggested below and add freelance writer to your resume, but you can also demonstrate just what you have done as a freelancer by inserting any articles you worked on as well. For an example as to how I combined my freelance career with my prior jobs, check out my LinkedIn profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/wmccance I hope this link helps you when you are putting your own resume together. Good Luck!

I bet you will get lots of great feedback on this question! Is your school able to connect you?

Hey, really look forward to the feedback. I am actually doing this part time along with college - but none of my work is related to college in manner. I will soon be appearing for B-school entrance examinations and interviews, for which I thought that adding my work as a freelance service provider to my resume would really be beneficial. Do you have any tips on how I should add it?
